El Centro, Imperial County
El Centro, the seat of Imperial County, is the largest city in the United States that lies entirely below sea level, about forty feet under. It was founded in 1906, soon after canals first brought Colorado River water to the desert. The surrounding Imperial Valley grows much of the lettuce, carrots and other winter vegetables sold across the country.
